Did you know?

Construction began in 1839 under the supervision of John Augustus Lloyd, then the island’s Surveyor General, opening in 1845 — but the site’s history goes back even further: an earlier bazaar already stood on this spot as early as 1774. The main building’s architecture, marked by its Victorian heritage, has been preserved despite a major modernisation in 2004, following fires that required partial rebuilding. The market today has 5 distinct sections: fruit and vegetables, meat, fish, small shops and dining.
