An iconic 555-metre mountain listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Le Morne is a memorial site dedicated to the resistance of runaway slaves and one of the best kitesurfing spots in the world.

Did you know?

In the 18th century, Le Morne served as a refuge for runaway slaves, the “Maroons”, who lived hidden in its steep caves — the mountain was nicknamed the “Republic of the Maroons”. According to local legend (whose exact historical accuracy is still debated by researchers), a group is said to have jumped from the summit in 1835 on seeing soldiers arrive, wrongly believing they had come to recapture them when in fact they had come to announce the abolition of slavery.
