🎧 1 history ⭐ Unmissable

Housed in the former Beau Plan sugar factory founded in 1797, this interactive museum traces three centuries of Mauritian history through the story of sugar cane, from its Dutch introduction to the modern industry.

Did you know?

The Beau Plan factory ran without interruption for more than two centuries, before closing for good in 1999, marking the end of three centuries of Mauritian sugar industry. Rather than leaving the site derelict, it was fully renovated and reopened as a museum in 1999-2002, according to sources. The tour doesn’t shy away from difficult subjects: it addresses slavery head-on — at its height, the enslaved population made up more than 80% of the island’s inhabitants — then the Indian indentured labour system that followed abolition, right up to the country’s independence. A free audio guide is available in 9 languages, and the site is today the first Mauritian cultural venue certified both Blue Oasis and Made in Moris.
