Nestled at 540 metres above sea level in a former volcanic crater, Grand Bassin is the most sacred Hindu pilgrimage site in Mauritius, watched over by a 33-metre statue of Shiva.

Did you know?

In 1897, a Hindu priest from the village of Triolet had a dream in which he saw the lake’s waters connected to the sacred Ganges in India — a lake he had, in fact, never visited. In 1972, Indian swamis officially poured water from the real Ganges into the lake, renaming the site “Ganga Talao”. Every year during Maha Shivaratree, thousands of pilgrims walk, sometimes for more than a week, to reach the site.
