🎧 1 history ⭐ Unmissable

Nestled near the village of Cluny in the south-east of the island, Eau Bleu is in fact a string of waterfalls with turquoise pools, reached by a hike through open countryside across cane fields and dense forest.

Practical information (hiking):

Compulsory guide: Not for the simple hike to the first waterfalls; strongly recommended (generally provided by a service provider) for any abseiling or river trekking activity.
Accessibility for children: Not recommended for young children — slippery trail, uneven terrain, some pools with no visible bottom.
Round-trip duration: About 2 to 3h to explore the whole site, depending on how many waterfalls you visit.
Difficulty level: Moderate to difficult — no official marked trail, muddy and slippery ground in places.
Price: Free access to the natural site (guided activities such as abseiling/canyoning are paid, via a service provider).

Did you know?

A water unlike any other — The name “Eau Bleue” (“Blue Water”) is no marketing accident: the strikingly turquoise colour of the water comes from the high mineral content of the river’s rocky bed, giving these natural pools an almost unreal clarity and colour. Not one waterfall, but several — Despite what its singular name suggests, Eau Bleue is not a single fall but a whole series — sources put the number at 4 to 7 waterfalls depending on the season, with the floods of the rainy season (December to April) sometimes revealing extra falls invisible the rest of the year. A river’s long journey — The water that tumbles down these falls rises at the Eau Bleue reservoir, then flows through several villages in south-east Mauritius — Banane, Cluny, Saint-Hubert, Riche en Eau — before finally joining the Rivière des Créoles. A playground for adventurers — Beyond simple swimming, the site is also prized for abseiling and river trekking led by professional guides, with the main falls reaching between 8 and 15 metres in height.
