A former sugar estate in the south-west of the island, established in 1765, Bel Ombre has been transformed into a vast setting blending protected nature reserves, an unspoilt beach and a 19th-century colonial château.

Did you know?

The estate owes its splendour to the Irish botanist Charles Telfair, who between 1816 and 1833 turned this neglected farm into a thriving sugar plantation. After the decline of the sugar industry, its 2,500 hectares were converted into protected nature reserves — including the Frédérica reserve, managed by the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation — home to deer, wild boar and rare birds amid the remains of old sugar mills.
