🎧 1 history

At the heart of Mapou lie the traces of Mauritius’s old railway network. The former station, its historic building and its water tank recall the days when trains regularly crossed the north of the island. The site is now intended, in time, to house a museum devoted to the history of the railway in Mauritius.
The station stands in the village of Mapou, near the old railway line. The building went on to be used as a post office, while the railway’s old water tank is still visible nearby.

The future railway museum is not yet open as a tourist attraction. The historic remains can be seen on site.

Did you know?

Mauritius had a railway network for exactly a century, from 1864 to 1964. At the time, many stations also served as post offices, which explains why several old railway buildings survived after the trains disappeared. Another interesting anecdote: some Mapou residents used to say that the old carriages parked near the station could even serve as shelter during cyclones, particularly for families whose homes were flimsy.
