The site of the very first permanent European landing on the island, in 1638, where the remains of the Dutch Fort Frederik Hendrik and later French colonial buildings still stand.

Did you know?

It was here, under the command of Cornelius Gooyer, that the Dutch established their first permanent colony and built a fort named in honour of Frederick Henry of Orange. Abandoned in 1710, the site was reoccupied by the French from 1722, who built over the Dutch ruins between 1753 and 1780 — making these the oldest colonial remains on the whole island today. The current museum, opened in 1999, displays objects uncovered during archaeological excavations.
