Île aux Aigrettes

🎧 1 history

A 26-hectare island nature reserve off Mahébourg, managed by the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation since 1965, where endemic wildlife and flora long vanished from the rest of the island have been patiently reintroduced.

Did you know?

Unlike the rest of the island, which is of volcanic origin, this small island is made of coral limestone. All invasive species (rats, cats, exotic plants) have been eradicated there to make way for Aldabra giant tortoises, pink pigeons and other endemic species now extinct on the mainland — a true ecological time machine.
