The island’s largest mosque, blending Indian, Creole and Islamic architecture, has occupied an entire block in the heart of Port Louis since the 1850s.

Did you know?

First called the “Mosque of the Arabs”, it was consecrated in 1852 by Muslim merchants from Kutch, in India, who bought the land not in their own name but on behalf of the island’s entire Muslim community. A century-old almond tree, already present on the land before the purchase, still graces its courtyard. For lack of masons who knew how to build a minaret, the building has none — an architectural detail that remains unchanged to this day.
