🎧 1 history

At the heart of Black River Gorges National Park, this viewpoint offers a spectacular view over the valleys, mountains and tropical forest. You may also spot the monkeys that regularly frequent the area around the viewpoint.

Did you know?

The monkeys you may encounter here are crab-eating macaques (Macaca fascicularis). Unlike several of the park’s birds and plants, they are not native to Mauritius: their ancestors were brought to the island by humans several centuries ago. They have since adapted perfectly to the Mauritian environment, and it is quite common to spot them around the viewpoint. As entertaining as they are to watch, avoid feeding them or getting too close: they remain wild animals. Behind them stretches Black River Gorges National Park, created in 1994 to protect part of Mauritius’s last native forests. It is home to several extremely rare endemic species. This panorama is therefore both one of the island’s finest viewpoints and a gateway to its natural heritage.
