🎧 1 history

Perched on a spectacular rocky promontory between Le Morne and Baie du Cap, the Macondé viewpoint offers one of the most impressive panoramas on Mauritius’s south-west coast. Here the road seems squeezed between the mountain and the Indian Ocean.

Did you know?

Macondé lies on one of the most spectacular stretches of the Mauritian coastal road. In this area, the mountainous relief drops almost straight into the ocean, which long made travel difficult. Today’s road hugs the coast as closely as possible, between cliffs and sea. Steps now lead to the top of Macondé rock, where you can look out over the winding road, the lagoon and the ocean. The name “Macondé” is generally linked to the Makondé, a people of East Africa, though the precise origin of the name given to this place should be treated with caution for lack of definitive historical documentation.
