Welcome to Chinatown, one of Port Louis’s most transporting historic quarters. Between archways, traditional shops, street art, restaurants and Sino-Mauritian specialities, this district tells more than two centuries of Chinese presence in Mauritius.

Did you know?

The Chinese presence in Port Louis goes back well before today’s image of Chinatown. Chinese immigrants settled in the capital as early as the 19th century and gradually built up a significant trading network. Chinese merchants would go on to play an essential role in supplying shops across the island. Chinatown thus became both a commercial hub and a major place for preserving and expressing Chinese culture in Mauritius. Today, its old shops sit alongside restaurants, street art and new cultural initiatives.
