Housed in a magnificent colonial residence dating from around 1772, the Mahébourg National History Museum traces several centuries of Mauritian history, from the first European explorations through the Dutch, French and British periods.

Did you know?

The museum occupies Château Gheude, also known as Maison Robillard. After the famous Battle of Grand Port in 1810, the French and British commanders, both wounded, are said to have been treated side by side in one wing of this residence. The collections include maps, paintings, historical documents and objects from underwater archaeology and old shipwrecks. The museum thus helps explain why Mahébourg holds such an essential place in Mauritius’s maritime history.
