Nestled in a sheltered, horseshoe-shaped bay, Grand Baie is Mauritius’s liveliest seaside resort. Between beaches, bars, restaurants and shops, it’s the essential starting point for excursions to the northern islets.

Did you know?

In 1642, the Dutch navigator Abel Tasman — the very man who would later give his name to Tasmania, in Australia — was tasked with charting the north of Mauritius. It was he who named this vast bay “De Bogt Zonder Eyndt”, or “The Bay Without End”, taken with its size and its many freshwater estuaries. A simple fishing village until the 1970s, Grand Baie is today nicknamed the “Mauritian Riviera”.
